My Biggest Fear

Marianne Williamson has been a hero of mine when I was compelled a few years ago to pick up her book sitting in a clearance pile at a San Diego Barnes and Noble. Sometimes books literally jump at me the way this one did. I still have the $3.99 sticker on Everyday Grace.  It was a perfect introduction to this wonderful woman–a small monetary investment that yielded a great return.

Since then I’ve purchased two other Marianne Williamson books. When I sent out yesterday’s Weekly Wise Words, I turned to wise words of Marianne’s that have meant a lot to me from The Gift of Change: Spiritual Guidance for Living Your Best Life. I bought The Age of Miracles: Embracing the New Midlife after I had the pleasure of spending three inspirational hours with Marianne last year when she was touring to promote this new book. I have used her advice in this book to inspire me to continue to embrace aging.

I love how Marianne uses her writing and speaking to inspire and empower others. This is my mission–to encourage, empower and inspire women through Wise Women Write and through the MOMS group I lead at my church as well as in the work I do with fearful flyers and Fearless flight.com. I am blessed to be doing work I love, work I’m passionate about, that helps other people.

Marianne says in The Gift of Change, “Our greatest contribution to the world at this time is not just what we do but who we are becoming…Let’s forgive the past and who we were then. Let’s embrace the present and who we’re capable of becoming.” I hope I’m doing my part by becoming a much better version of myself every day!

Long before I knew who Marianne Williamson was, my LifeLines co-author Ann Rigby emailed me a Marianne Williamson quote that touched me deeply. Maybe because I work with fearful flyers and dealing with FEAR (False Evidence Appearing Real) is a big part of my everyday life. But I’ve never heard fear described quite the way Marianne describes it. I typed out the passage and gave it to one of my daughters. She went off to college, but I hope she took Marianne’s words with her. When I walk into her empty room, I pass by the words reminding me of my biggest fear–that my biggest fear is me.

Today I found Marianne’s “Biggest Fear” words in a video from wisdomoftheworld.com, and hearing her speak these words, I cried. In this season of light, may her words also  touch you and help you to realize that you, me–all of us–are “powerful beyond measure.”
