Writing, Women, and Memoir

by Diane Owens on October 25, 2009

I stumbled on a must-read post about writing because it had “fear of flying” in it.  I subscribe to Google alerts for fear of flying, and thank goodness, because I found this wonderful piece from the Huffington Post about writing and women and memoir and friends and…well, see for yourself! It’s a conversation among the post’s author and her three friends who happen to be successful writers. Two have written best-selling memoir, and the other will be published soon as a #1 pick of Penguin sales reps.

The headline, Writing as Therapy, grabbed me because that’s what I believe.  Some of what they discuss:

  • What makes memoir material,
  • How a cookbook became a memoir,
  • How to deal with family you include in your memoir,
  • How to make a book 17% funnier (you read that percentage right!) using a funny friend,
  • How to manipulate Barnes and Noble,
  • What to say to a TSA security guy who grabs a maxi pad from your carry on while you’re on a frazzled book tour,
  • Why things get better for a woman once she turns 50.

It’s very long but worth every word, so I’ll be short so you can get to it!

I don’t think enough can be said on this topic because memoir is everywhere these days. As a writer with a blog, I’m really writing memoir snippets. Looking forward to reading this article with a nice cup of coffee in my hand!

Dawn,
I love that observation about blogs being memoir snippets! And I love your blog!
